Raoul Hafner, an Austrian born British helicopter engineer of the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment, designed this aircraft and a prototype was built in 1942. It required two personnel to pilot it, one to pilot it in the air and another to drive it as an automobile. Its name was changed from ‘Blitz Buggy’ to ‘Rotabuggy’.

One of the many experiments undertaken in World War II to increase battlefield mobility by the provision of rotary wings for men and vehicles, the Hafner Rotabuggy was intended as a stepping-stone to a flying Valentine tank. This prompted Hafner to propose the Rotabuggy, a rotor-equipped Jeep, and the Rotatank, a similarly-equipped Valentine tank. A contract to develop the former was placed with the ML Aviation Company at WHite Waltham in 1942, this being covered by specification 10/42. Hafner "Rotachute" 1942 This autogyro glider, development work on which was done during World War II by Raoul Hafner and the staff of the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment at Beaulieu in Hampshire, was intended to land a paratrooper armed with a Bren gun after being dropped with the rotachute from a large transport aircraft designed for the purpose. The Hafner Rotabuggy, as it became known, was to carry a pilot and a small load, together with a complete tankage of fuel and spare wheel, spare tank, tools and snow chains.

Hafner rotabuggy

The Rotabuggy was developed from the Rotachute and was designed to fit Air Ministry specification 10/42 for the air-dropping of vehicles. Built in 1943, the prototype was a modified Willy’s Jeep and was initially towed behind a lorry, but this wasn’t fast enough so a Supercharged 4.5litre Bentley was used instead. Now that’s class!
